How do you truly know for sure your depressed?
I believe I am but not quite sure. Can you give me some examples/signs of depression?
Answer:
There is not actually a unified definition for depression. some say it is clinical depression when it gets in the way of your every day life. But to me this is very vague because your emotions allways affect your behaviour to some extent. Even if you are just a little bit down. A different example would be if you were feeling angry a lot it might make you adopt more violent opinions or harsher views. I think it is really a scale from very happy most of the time to very depressed most of the time with all of us being somewhere on that scale and changing to different parts of the scale – as we can all suffer from ‘depression’ at some point in our lives. As for medication this is normally used to treat severe depression as the side effects of the tablets might outweigh the possible benefits if the person was only a little bit down. In extreme cases where the patient has recurring hospital admissions and appear to have ‘resistant’ depression electroconvulsive therapy is sometimes given. Many people also like to say that they will never class it as depression if it lasts less than two weeks. I would like to point out in my personal opinion I think depression could be used if the persons state of mind changes abruptly without a cause which would make sense to the majority of the population. However many of us to suffer this and if we all classed it as depression then I beleive most of us would have depression at some point in our lives. Most medical professionals say about 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 get depression at some point in their life. In general the psychiatric definitions of depression tend to describe severe cases mostly in personality types very suceptiable to low mood who often have low self esteem and sense of self worth. Most hospital admissions for depression tend to be cases likely to commit suicide. However the majority of others who seek help are not that bad but need help to prevent it from getting that bad and simply to help them lead a better quality of life.
